What is the Twitter/X Character Limit?

Twitter (now rebranded as X) has a standard character limit of 280 characters per tweet for free users. This was doubled from the original 140 character limit back in November 2017 to give users more room to express their thoughts.

Character Limit for X Premium Users

With an X Premium (formerly Twitter Blue) subscription, the character limit increases dramatically to 25,000 characters — essentially turning tweets into long-form posts. However, only the first 280 characters are shown in the timeline; readers must click to see the rest.

How Characters Are Counted on X

  • URLs: Every URL counts as 23 characters, regardless of its actual length. Twitter uses its t.co link shortener automatically.
  • Emojis: Most emojis count as 2 characters due to their Unicode encoding.
  • Mentions: The @username does count towards the limit in regular tweets, but not in replies (the reply-to mention is hidden).
  • Hashtags: The full hashtag including the # symbol counts towards the limit.
  • Media: Attaching photos, videos, or GIFs does NOT count against the character limit.

Tips for Crafting the Perfect Tweet

  • Front-load your message: Put the most important information first, as tweets can be truncated in notifications.
  • Use threads: If you need more space, use a thread instead of cramming everything into one tweet.
  • Keep it punchy: Studies show tweets between 71-100 characters receive the highest engagement.
  • Add a CTA: Use your remaining characters for a clear call-to-action.
